I had a bittersweet conversation with my very ill mother today, and was so
struck by something she said. In her most distressing moments, she has
tried to find pleasant memories to hold on to. Today she shared with me
that the memory she has most clung to is an image she conjurs up of nursing
my middle brother, Frank. He was a happy baby, and very easy going. She
remembers him smiling up at her and patting her breast with his chubby fist.
Here she is, almost at the last, and what is her sweetest memory? Amidst my
sadness, I had a really strong affirmation that I, that all of us, are in
the right business.
