Friends,
I couldn't help notice the contrast in responses from Jack and Pierett. Both
are well taken points from the settings in which they practice. We have a
Pregnancy and Recovery clinic in our setting. Two of those moms recently
delivered premies. One mom went into alcohol rehab, inpatient after discharge
the other is suppose to be getting into an outpatient program for cocaine.
We've cont to say breastmilk is best for your baby, the drugs aren't. They
are willing to have some spot checking done, understand our concerns, and
also know that they suffer from a disease that innately involves relapse.
It's these types of folks, who are in the minority of most of our practices,
who make it difficult to say an occasional drink is no big deal, b/c of their
lack of boundaries, their perception of what is occasional and how much is a
little. Pierett, I'd be curious to ask what type of questions you use to
tease out this info, as I do see it as a skill.
