A mom I am working with claims her milk is cold coming from the breast. She
is convinced that this "cool milk problem" is causing her baby to be colicky
I told the mom that there isn't any evidence that cold or cool milk causes
increased gas or fussiness. She says her husband has commented on how cold
the milk seems to be coming right from the breast.
This is the oddest problem I have run across. I swear it's not a joke. This
mom is really concerned.
So, I recommended that she take her oral temperature and the temperature of
the milk immediately coming from the breast. Her oral temperature was 98.4
and the temperature of the milk was 91.2 F. Now what?
One would assume that milk coming directly out of the breast should be the
same as the core body temperature (which for most people is 99.6 F degrees).
So it should feel slightly warm to the touch because our skin temperature is
only 1 degree lower then the core temperature. Right?
It's a strange thing to be concerned with but could this indicate any kind of
a problem? (I was thinking maybe circulatory but wouldn't it be unlikely that
she would produce much milk if the blood flow to the breast wasn't normal?)
I haven't got a clue what if anything is going on here. My guess is that no
one knows and it doesn't matter anyway but I was asked to run it by all my
Lactnet friends.
TIA
