There are more references on dental caries than I dare clog the list with.
But in my opinion, the best is:
Erickson, P. R. and Mazhari, E. Investigation of the role of human breast
milk in caries development. Pediatr Dent. 1999 Mar-1999 Apr 30; 21(2):86-90.
These two are also pretty good:
Weerheijm, K. L.; Uyttendaele-Speybrouck, B. F.; Euwe, H. C., and Groen, H.
J. Prolonged demand breast-feeding and nursing caries. Caries Res. 1998;
32(1):46-50
Oulis, C. J.; Berdouses, E. D.; Vadiakas, G., and Lygidakis, N. A. Feeding
practices of Greek children with and without nursing caries. Pediatr Dent.
1999 Nov-1999 Dec 31; 21(7):409-16.
The fact that you mention a clinic patient, however, makes me wonder if
perhaps the dentist who is recommending weaning is looking at a study that
showed the clinic kids had a lot of caries, either breastfed or bottle fed:
Quartey, J. B. and Williamson, D. D. Prevalence of early childhood caries
at Harris County clinics. ASDC J Dent Child. 1999 Mar-1999 Apr 30;
66(2):127-31, 85.
By the way, I was fairly confident that I had talked about caries somewhere
in my book, but I can't find it in the index. (OK, I could also be
mistaken!) If any of you have gripes about the index for my book, please
know that a professional indexer indexed it, and the *author* can't find
half of what she believes to be in these 464 pages! If you've encountered
the same thing, and can give me specifics, please send
mailto:[log in to unmask] and I'll chew out the publisher. Thanks.
