Edith, There is another SEVERE rash associated with pregnancy and Lactation
called Herpes Gestationalis. It is not really a viral rash but the name was
given because it resembles a Herpes rash. It is a severe rash of pregancy,
only treatable with cortizone and that is only given when the patient can't
tolerate the intense itching, probably several times during the pregnancy. It
is given in graduated doses. This condition may continue after delivery
ESPECIALLY IF THE PATIENT DOES NOT BREAST FEED. The patients are advised to
avoid another pregnancy as the condition will increase in severity. It will
sometimes pop up after the mother weans if she goes on birth control pills.
This is a rare condition, 1 in 50,000 pregnancies and she will probably have
to see a perinatologist for a diagnoses. The babies are usally fine,
sometimes IUGR. Pat Riley RNC,MS,IBCLC
