Judy,

I was the WIC breastfeeding coordinator for 9 years until two months ago, when I left my position due to lack of funding. I now work as the LC for our local hospital. Because of this unique connection, I know all of what is available at the local WIC office and do refer quite a few of the patients there. I run the pump rental station here at the hospital, but if a patient is on WIC, I always refer to our WIC office for the free pump. Since I established that program, I don't want to see it go by the wayside.

I suggest you meet with hospital staff to let them know what you have to offer. Maybe you could have the hospital put information in the patient discharge packets. Something like: If you are on WIC, you are eligible for this, this and this. If you would like information about how to apply for WIC, call_____. This could serve as a great outreach tool for your WIC agency.

Did you know that there is a listserve for WIC-based LCs?
