Hello,
This is a new one on me, so I hope someone has had an experience with this type of case. A mom I am working with has had thrush back and forth between her breasts and baby's mouth for 6 weeks. She has treated the thrush with nystatin, miconazole, and gentian violet (both she and the baby have been treated). Nothing has worked, and baby keeps getting recurrence of oral thrush.
At one point the thrush went away, only to reappear in baby's mouth two weeks later. The weird thing here is that now the mother has a red raised rash all over her breasts, not involving the nipple or areola. It itches, but does not burn. Her OB treated it with steroid cream, and it went away, only to reappear again after she discontinued the use of it.
Mom says this rash only reappears when the baby's thrush reappears. What is the connection here? This mom has not tried diflucan yet, but the OB says her rash is not thrush related.
Thanks,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
