I went to a sad/tragic a home visit today - baby 5 days, couldn't latch, mom
had epidural plus vacuum extractor. (Usual frustrating stuff but not the
worst part of this story.) The sad/tragic part: the woman's mother and many
of her family members had come to town for a family reunion a few days
before the baby was due. Almost at the same time that the mom went into
labor, her mother almost simultaneously started feeling ill, was taken to
the hospital, admitted to the coronary care unit and died a few hours later
of a ruptured aortic aneurysm. The family members withheld this information
from the mother until a few hours after her baby was born. The OB also
slowed her labor down so that she would give birth on a different day than
her mother's death. So here she is with a house full of relatives, the
sudden death of her own mother, and a baby who isn't feeding well. One
sister is a nurse and is running interference for her and doing a great job.
We're on the way to fixing the feeding problem.
