Here's one of my favorite sections from the 1942 American Red Cross Home
Nursing Handbook, which urges "waiting" to begin toilet training until 8 or
9 months:

"If the mother forms the habit of watching the child for signs that he needs
to go to the toilet, takes him promptly at that time, and praises him for
his accomplishment, he will soon learn to accept it as an agreeable
experience and this, together with the comfort of clean clothes, will lead
him to come to her again when he feels the need for emptying bowels or
bladder.  Usually the baby will have learned both bladder and bowel control
by the time he is 2 or 3 years old."

A great plan.  We were lazy, and just waited until 2 or 3 years to start...
