Who does the circs depends on where you are in the US. Here in Salt Lake the
peds seem to do the majority. In the hospitals where I round the peds do all
circs. When I practiced in Chicago the OBs did them (and I never told the HMO
I worked for that I knew how-it's not a procedure I feel great about doing).
Many offices are set up to do circs as an outpatient procedure, and I do a
fair number in my small office. Many insurance plans pay (which continues to
astound me, given that this is a medically unnecessary cosmetic procedure),
but SOME will not pay when the procedure is done as an outpatient. I am quite
sure of this, because we do our own billing. I always warn the parents about
this and encourage them to check with their insurance company so that there
won't be any surprises.
