In our area (Maryland, USA) the pediatricians usually recommend cereals
first then vegetables then fruit. However I lucked out and got a wonderful
former La Leche League Leader from Colorado who's births were attended by
Dr. Bradley (as in The Bradley Method) and she taught a breastfeeding class
at the Baltimore Birth Center where I've had my kids - and am about to have
another in two months. She recommended starting with fruits since they are
the most easily and quickly digested, tend to result in fewer allergies and
are sweet - just like mother's milk. Then she recommended vegetables and
then cereals. I followed this with both of my boys and everything has worked
out fine. She said that it's ridiculous that pediatricians advise staying
away from fruits because they're sweet - because breastmilk is sweet. So
it's a more natural progression. I tend to agree and plan to do the same
with our daughter, when she's ready.
