I was the original poster on the topic of the article in the New York Times.
Thanks everyone for responding. Dr. Jellife's remarks are so pertinent
today. To the person who posted the references to his research, could you
email me privately with a copy of your post? I inadvertently deleted your
post, and I know I don't have those references. I wish I had heard him
speak; he obviously made a big impression.
I am wondering if anyone has read the original article. The New York Times
took a news release from the UN, and probably editorialized, and I would
like to know what they said in the original paper.
The issue of poor quality of supplemental food is a very important one.
There is so much information on the increase in respiratory and
gastrointestinal infections when there is inappropriate supplementation, and
I wonder if the study addressed this at all.
I would prefer to discuss the specifics of the study: we have general
agreement in this forum that feeding the mother is most likely to be
preferable. Sometimes these studies are influential in the larger arena of
policymaking, and in the current climate of blaming breastfeeding for mother
to child transmission of HIV, criticism of exclusive breastfeeding needs to
be effectively refuted.
I receive mailings from the Nutrition Section of UNICEF with many valuable
papers, but I got nothing on this. Has anyone seen the original study,
published for the Indian Naitonal Family Health Survey by Ravilla Anandaiah
and Minja Kim Choe?
Regards to all,
Kate Sharp
