Rachel,
I hasten to say that I've not read the article yet either.
I did, however, recently review for Marie Biancuzzo's newsletter, the 2
set Vida Video training films on the Clinical Management of
Breastfeeding, for whom Ruth Lawrence was one of the consultants.
When referring to holding the breast, though the C hold was fully
described and recommended, there was a beautiful segue into the classic
scissors hold by way of centuries-old drawings and paintings of nursing
mothers in different ages and cultures, with the comment that the
individual mother may need guidance, but is the final arbiter.
Perhaps our focus on getting mothers off to a good start in the early
days makes us forget that many mothers of older babies revert almost
automatically to the "scissors" or "cigarette" hold after "C hold"
instruction during the initial learning period.
Perhaps there is room for more than one way, with proper instruction.
Let's not be too quick to throw out babies with the bathwater!
Jean
