i had a lovely visit with a family last year in which the mother expressed
some "concerns" about co-sleeping, was trying to come to accept it as normal,
etc., after having had what even she acknowledged was a completely typical
american upbringing. who was agitating for the family bed? her husband, who
was from somewhere i forget but in the middle east. he spoke quite
beautifully of growing up with seven siblings and co-sleeping with first
parents and then grandparents, siblings, etc. and of remembering his mother
breastfeeding his younger siblings.

his summation of why their son needed to be in their bed? because "he would
be lonely!" otherwise. so i know these societies exist as the norm -
somewhere- as well as in "pockets of resistance" in this country.
