Hi Everyone,
Some of you will remember my unfortunate incident where I was involved
in the wrong baby going to the breast for which I got a final written
warning. So many of you sent me support by e-mail which was so appreciated
and helped enormously. Mistakes bring big changes! Our nursery is now
defunct and the babies room-in. I would just like to relate to you what
happened to the mothers.
The mother who had the wrong baby put to her breast (I'll call her
Louise) is a Social Worker at our hospital (and a very dear friend of mine)
was on leave about 90 kms from our hospital and was called back to the
hospital to counsel a family - the father had been shot and the mother badly
wounded in ICU. Louise spent about 2 hours helping the family and
organizing matters for them etc. She sat down to have tea with them and a
toddler came into the room - she commented that the baby was about the same
age as her baby and asked the mother (daughter of the woman that had been
shot) where she had had the baby - the mother went into a rage and told her
about incident where the baby was put to the wrong breast - Louise
questioned her futher and then said to the Mom "but your baby was put to my
breast" The mother was aghast and said to her "but you are such a
wonderful person" - both wept and spoke about the incident and both felt
much better! I wept too when I heard the story. Louise is still
breastfeeding her baby. What can I say except thanks for your support. I
know that is what "Lactnet" is all about.
Sincerely,
Barbie Currie. RN RM White River, Mpumalanga, South Africa.
