I recently sent the post below to the hospital based LC group. I'd like to
counter the viewpoint that the "C" hold is "correct" and the "scissor hold"
is wrong. I think we are too rigid on this point. Somewhere on the web is
an article with illustrations of old, old art - all showing the scissors
hold for cradle position. It isn't wrong. C hold in football or cross
cradle makes the oval of the breast run up and down the baby's face (from
forehead to chin). I'd also refer those who haven't seen/heard it to Diane
W's hamburger analogy.
When you read the JAMA article be sure to notice the picture of the "correct
hold" for the mother's hand. It states the classic "C" hold is wrong and
she has a new to me hold, sort of scissors but with only 3 fingers
underneath
If you are reading online you have to open a special window to see this. I
found it interesting. I do find the scissors hold valuable for the cradle
position as it puts the oval of the squished areola in the same plane as the
oval of the baby's mouth. For football and cross cradle I find the "U"
hold more valuable is a "squish" is needed. If a squish is NOT needed then
the "C" hold seems to be best all around. Comments on your experiences and
feelings about the JAMA article's illustration and mom's hold names and
recommendations are solicited.
