I took a class from a PT many years ago. It was concerning breastfeeding and
babies body position and assistance one could give to certain problems babies
were having. The theory is that if you manipulate a muscle to go in the
direction that you want --it will actually do the opposite. This theory is
well recognized by OT and PT's. His solution was to push up under the chin
and then to let go. Thus if you want the babies mouth to open you do the
opposite you push it closed with you finger and quickly remove your finger
and the baby's mouth opens. I usually do this for babies who clench their jaw
while they feed. I have the mother do the exercise about 5 times every time
before feeding. Most babies if you give them time will open their mouth. Some
babies have problems with there necks and shoulders due to the birth and this
can negatively affect the babies ability to open wide.
