It's not the women (usually) who are violent but the partners (often drunk/drugged) who can't see any problem in abusing not only you but their labouring partner and anyone else in the place. At one hospital we had buzzer like the emergency buzzer but it went straight to security and the wardsmen.
I don't think we need to put up with abuse at work (or at home), and I hope Jackie didn't really mean we deserve it.
