Just a thought from personal experience - has this mom had her thyroid checked?
I went through a similar situation and at first it was thought to be menopause. After ruling out an infection, and two checks of hormone levels (which were nornal), the OB ordered yet another hormone level check and wanted me to do a PMS journal (even though I'd never had any serious PMS symptoms ever) I got angry and suggested that a thryroid level check be done, since the symptoms of both were similar.
After more than a year of intermittent symptoms and a thyroid level check it was determined that I did indeed have hypothroidism. On medication and the symptoms disappeared.
This is just another avenue to check.
