Just as culture can teach us ideas/rules/attitudes, which then influence our
physiology and our reactions to things that we see and feel and otherwise
sense, so can individual experiences lead to changes in our physiology.

When I was doing chemo, I was supposed to take Zofran pills to combat the
nausea, but I developed such a connection in my mind that even just seeing
the bottle of pills would make me want to throw up -- they had just the
opposite effect of what they were supposed to. And I've heard stories from
others doing chemo that they would start to feel nauseous as they drove into
the parking lot of the cancer center, long before the IV treatment that was
the physical basis of the nausea.
