Gail,

First congratulations on residency graduation; that's a big milestone!

Regarding the question of who should prescribe for mom, I think any
licensed physician who feels comfortable doing so can and should.

This is where the specialty of Family Medicine comes in (had to toot my
specialty's horn, somehow!) Since we are trained in both adult and baby
care (and most even deliver babies) we are comfortable prescribing for
both. It never ceases to amaze me how many people have no idea what Family
Practitioners actually do. Last Thursday, I got to see both my oldest
(103yrs) and my youngest (6hrs, for neonatal assessment) patient in the
same day!

But as I said before, if Pediatricians feel comfortable prescribing for mom
in those situations, it doesn't bother me. After all, they did adult
medicine rotations in medical school, too.
