Dear Lactnuts,
I use all kinds things for all kinds of purposes other then their designer
intended me to, both private and professional. What ever works, works. But I
have to admit I'm very guilty of living in a community where sueing (sp?) is not
a national sport (right now, soccer is, Dutch streets have suddenly turned
bright orange and Belgian TV shows grinning ''red devils'' slicing yellow-orange
Dutch cheese)
But about designed vs occasional tools. We have to remember that most tools have
been designed only after some creative users took whatever seemed to be doing
the job they wanted to be done, including the Evert-it, which is nothing more
than a expensive way to turn one half of a syringe up side down. The harm that
can be done with both is about the same: none if used properly and severe if
used bad, as with many tools.
Tools, techniques or whatever in itself do not do the harm, the way they're used
should be carefully prepared, studied and monitored. A good care provider will
use whatever can be used, be it techniques, tools, knowledge or whatever, tell
the client why it is used, how it is used and what goal to be achieved with it
and then work carefully and thoughtfully so no harm will be done. The mean point
as I see it, is that the care provider should be able to clearly explain the
problem to the client and what techniques etc s/he will use to solve it. This
should be done in such a way that the client understands the problem, the
possible solution, possible traps to be aware of and then be able to decide to
go along with it -or not. This ofcourse is about truely informed choices and if
that is aimed and reached one shouldn't be afraid to be called to court.

Think I climbed a soapbox somewhere along my speech ... better be off now.
