I think this happens much more commonly than anyone realizes. We were
given a hound puppy once who moved right in with our current mama cat and
kittens and nursed. I swear he thought he was a cat :-) Another time my
mil's dog died shortly after giving birth. Her other dog had given birth 3
days before. At first we rotated the pups, a litter at a time, to nurse
until the newborns gained in size and strength, then mama dog just had 6
pups instead of 3. I tried bot fdg puppy milk (formula) to help out but
they didn't need it and it was a mess so I gave it up quickly. (that was
