<1) I was caring for a teen mom with a milk allergy who was planning to
formula feed. I discussed how bf reduces allergies, is easier, healthier
and cheaper and she replied that for her formula is easier and cheaper
as she receives WIC. While it is likely this baby will never receive a
drop of breastmilk, I was able to educate some of the nurses on the unit
about how WIC works (or doesn't).>
Obviously she wasn't exposed to or didn't pick up or chose to ignore the
message from her particular WIC program that:
*She herself will receive a larger food package if she breastfeeds
exclusively.
*Reduction in that food package would occur if she feels she absolutely
needs to have a partial or full formula package but still continues to
breastfeed at least partially.
* Her food package will end at 6 months if she formula feeds, but
continue till 12 months if she breastfeeds, even partially.
*The size of her full formula package is only sufficient for the needs of
a term newborn and will not increase as the baby's needs grow.
*Someone will have to buy extra formula every month to make up the
difference UNLESS SHE MAINTAINS A PARTIAL MILK SUPPLY.
