I realize people need to "grow up" and hear the
truth but, at the same time....I realize people have personal issues and
we need
to be sensitive. Would love to hear from anyone else who has experience
with
lots of nurse ed.

Happy '4th' Susan,
I too have encountered women, not just nurses, who attend our
Infant Feeding Group (IFG) and are upset when they hear us comparing
formula to mama milk. I acknowledge the fact that they were never given
the facts regarding breast benefits vs. formula risks. this usually
helps them realize 'Yes, you're right. I never heard this info. before,
so you're not saying there is something wrong with 'me' for not BF.
I got a call last week from a former coworker. She and baby (2
days old) were having latching problems. She wanted to BF so badly she
didn't want anything to prevent her from doing so. She disclosed the
fact that she was so upset with herself for not BF her 5 yr. old. I gave
her that same 'talk' And suggested she let the HCP know how upset she
still is for never receiving information regarding BF 5 years ago. Maybe
that will encourage the HCP to at least talk about it to moms. I also
suggested she write to the president of the hospital and let him know
they need more help from IBCLC's to encourage a good learning experience
from her sad situation. And that's what we're all about: Teaching!
