<<Evidence is accumulating to indicate that abrupt increases in free fatty
acids>> of one sort or another is
<<nonspecific failure to thrive are often determined to have low plasma
carnitine levels>>

If you search pubmed using "metabolic SIDS & carnitine" to narrow the search
to 11 studies, it appears that the rate of metabolic SIDS ranges from the
high of 15-20% to a low of 0% in more more recent publications. This appears
to be blatent research tunnel--vision with a purpose of using NARROW evidence
to extrapolate into meeting one's BROAD and INAPPROPRIATE goals. i.e. Do with
formula what is done with MOST drugs......show it works in as small percent
NO MATTER WHAT THE SIDE EFFECTS.......THEN MARKET IT!!!! The following 2
citation quotes tell the bottom line:

J Pediatr 1986 Jan;108(1):13-8, Recognition of medium-chain acyl-CoA
dehydrogenase deficiency in asymptomatic siblings of children dying of sudden
infant death or Reye-like syndromes.PMID: 3944676, UI: 86114486
"Further studies suggest that BREAST-FEEDING may be protective for infants
with MCAD deficiency."

Arch Dis Child 1991 Nov;66(11):1315-7Inherited metabolic diseases in the
sudden infant death syndrome. PMID: 1755645, UI: 92095662 "All sudden,
unexpected infant deaths presenting during a two year period within a defined
geographical area in Avon and north Somerset were investigated for inherited
metabolic disease. These findings suggest that the incidence of MCAD
deficiency and other metabolic diseases in SIDS is much lower than previously
claimed."
