A mom just called to go over information about blood in her milk. This is her
third child and she has breast fed all three children. The baby is 2 months
old. Baby spit out blood after a feed. No crack or evidence of blood directly
from nipple. Mom pumped about 1 oz of blood from the breast. Bleeding stopped
after a few days. No plugged ducts that she can feel anywhere else on the
breast. No pain or real discomfort. It is only occurring from one side.

Doctor says she needs to wean to do any testing. Mom is not comfortable
weaning and wants to know options.

I read from Breastfeeding answer book which referenced Lawrence, Riordan, and
Aurbach's books. In these books it talked about an intraductal papilloma. It
also said that breastfeeding did not need to be interrupted. Her bleeding
does stop after a few days. I believe it has happen twice with only this last
baby.

Has anyone had any experience with blood from in the breast tissue and not
from the nipple?

Thanks,
Annette Leibovitz, IBCLC
