This could be breast hypoplasia which may result in primary lactation
insufficiency. I hope not and baby will grow to reach over the nipple to the
milk sinuses. I do not think nipple shield will help in this case. I would
try different positions and latches, some babies do much better in sidelying
next to mom. But I would DEFINITELY follow the rules of 1. feed the baby
(good that the supply line is working and baby gaining, 2. protect her
supply with a hospital grade double electric pump. I would closely follow to
see what her supply is and if baby does more drinking at breast. Did this
mom experience postpartum breast fullness/heaviness/hardness/engorgement?
