Re: Kris's mom with burning nipples that turn purple when pumped. Baby
smacks while sucking. I seriously doubt this has anything to do with
thrush. When I read the first post I immed. thought of all the bruised and
discolored nipples I've seen when pumping technique is too aggressive or
there is a mis-match between the size of the flange and a pinched, too tight
fit with the nipple. Nipples can burn and hurt from other things besides
thrush, and certainly nerve damage from bruising is a common reason for
nipple pain in my exper. Watch her pump and look at how the fit is. Also,
if the baby loses suction during feeding, that would cause a break in seal
with a resultant smack. Babies are brilliant compensators. If this baby
has weak ability to form suction, he/she may be clamping with extra jaw
tension to hold the nipple in the mouth. This could also contribute to
discomfort. I think the OT is a good idea.
