Jack,
In case it was my post to Lactnet which was misinterpreted, may I say that - long ago - I was suggesting a kind of a variation, termed "alternate massage", in various editions of my first book, Successful Breastfeeding, first published in 1974.
In my Lactnet post, I was objecting to the routine use of compression to eliminate pauses in a breastfeed, in response to another post. In other words, use appropriately, and not turn the technique into a kind of Taylorism, to speed up the breastfeed when maybe the infant wants to take her/his time. It comes back to the idea of watching the baby, and responding to needs.
So, no, I wasn't attacking the technique, only its use to speed up feeds, per se.
