I'm a hospital based lactation consultant and would very much appreciate your
comments and suggestions regarding this situation. I received a call from a
mother of a 4 month old yesterday. Baby breastfed fine for two months. He
then developed an ear infection and was placed on Biaxin and then Zithromax..
By the time these medications were finished he was having blood in his
stools. The physician thought this was due to breastfeeding and advised
mother to put baby on Nutramigen and pump. The bloody stools improved.
Mother returned baby to breast, the blood returned and baby became very
irritable. Mother has been advised to eliminate dairy. Baby has been
referred to a gastroenterologist. The physician is also concerned about
reflux. Mother is concerned she may be advised to discontinue breastfeeding.
She was not successful breastfeeding her first child. Growth and
development are on track for this baby. She asked if there were other things
she could elininate from her diet. I reviewed allergens. I am wondering if
there is some connection with the medications baby received. Mother has
given permission to share this situation with lactnet. Thanks so much.
