Frustrating call today from a woman I talked with by phone over the weekend.
she was renting a pump for symptoms of mastitis and wanting to dry up and
wean. Mom ANd sister rented the pump for her totally non supportive. Calls
me crying today because I gave her instructions to taper off gradually, drop
one feeding at a time and to first pump through the mastitis symptoms. She
is now mad at me because she called her "DOCTOR" and another lactation
consultant who both told her to Bind her breasts and not pump at all. To use
cold compresses and pain medication to "get through it" Of course this women
did not come in for a consult just wants FREE ACCURATE advice . She asks
me today "How long have you done this?" I get this all the time. How do
some of you deal with not wanting to give out advice unless a paid consult is
involved? I told this woman that she was free to follow whichever advice she
chose. Seh asked me my oppinion and I gave her the latest information
available on drying up your milk that is out there. Yes many women dry up
the other way with little problem, but it is not the standard of care today.
Of coure I also explained that the reason she is not drying up as quickly as
she thinks she should is also because in the first few weeks of breastfeeding
most women have an overabundance of milk almost no matter what they do. I
am so frustrated with women who ask my advice and then go find 3 other people
to tell them I am wrong. sorry for the rambling but I need some people to
tell me I AM RIGHT!!! :)
