I haven't seen a response to Barbara's question about the recent JAMA
article Aug 23/30 (JAMA 2000 284; 8: 993-1000). I've copied it but haven't
had time to read it carefully yet.
In the discussion they say "Because 75% of brain growth is completed by age
3 years (ref 34), the ability of the brain to recover from early nutritional
deficiences is limited. Severe malnutrition in the first year of life, even
if corrected later, is associated with intelligence deficiencies at ages 11
to 18 years (ref 35)." p 999
