For what it is worth, I was diagnosed with mastitis at age 20, before my
first pregnancy. It was blamed on birth control pills, occurring the first
cycle I tried a progesterone only pill. I had rock hard, red breasts
bilaterally, and mega-pain. It was gone within a few days of discontinuing
the pills. I never had mastitis through four years of lactation, just the
occasional plugged duct.
