Chris Mulford brings up such an important point, and it is a profoundly
feminist issue.  Until women have some way to protect themselves from
infection with HIV, the AIDS epidemic will continue.  Too many women lack
the power to negotiate the use of a condom by their male partner.
Development of a contraceptive/viracide/barrier/drug/etc that is under the
control of women, the epidemic will continue to be driven by male sexual
behavior.
