Mom boarding in hospital for infant with hypoglycemia is extremely upset.
Two pediatricians from the pediatric practice she is going to have admonished
her for using SNS at the breast and for thinking of continuing breastfeeding
when she clearly does not have enough milk transfer to support her baby's
needs. Mom left crying and upset over this. Baby's blood sugars were in
high 30's and IV was started and doctor ordered 60cc of formula after each
nursing. Of course, baby isn't interested in feeding after receiving this
much formula, for hours afterwards. Baby is now off IV's, mother's breasts
are full, positivie MER noted, and baby's blood sugar today before feeding
was 48. Doctor told her baby is "suffering" due to mom's desire to
breastfeed. Mom has insisted on using SNS at the breast for all feedings
around the clock and is very tired and ready to throw in the towel after
doctor made fun of the SNS. Any good studies to show this pediatrician about
the recanalization of ducts and that SOME mom's are able to get enough milk
out to baby or at least only supplement with small amount of ABM? Your help
would be appreciated. I personally reassured the mom, who goes home today
with baby, that I would followup with her tomorrow and that it is just too
early, with all the stress, to make a full assessment yet. Once she is home,
in her own environment, and calmed down, things may improve. SIGH. Loni
