it is my understanding that marianne neifert published something asserting
that 5% of women can't breastfeed. once at journal club here she sort of
waffled on that figure, but it was unclear if she was retracting or changing
the figure at the time. but there is something published making that claim.
obviously, we could account for a *much* larger percentage if we include
women who can physically produce milk but can't or won't breastfeed for other
reasons, but i have always thought that there is a sort of core definition
which is that physically the moms don't produce all the milk their babies
need. a pretty sorry thing to use as a reason to not "feed the baby at the
breast."
