Lactnetters,
I am an on again off again Lactnetter, time to read a major
issue...
I have been working with a mom with very low milk supply and we
have been doing all the standards--pumping, SNS, thyroid etc, etc, etc,
etc. After 10 full days of mom doing everything requested of her there
is no change in supply. We are discussing galactagogs (IS there an E in
there?????) but she and I both believe that an earlier surgery she had
has impacted her lactational abilities tremendously. She felt 'fuller'
during pregnancy but never need to changed bras size. And she had 'some
fullness' 4-5 days postpartum. I am throwing this out for informational
discussion. And a question.
At 14 years of age (mom is mid 30's, first baby, no problem getting
preg) she had heart surgery to correct a heart murmur. She said she had
begun to develop breast, but they also grew (alot) after surgery. Her
doctor told her and her parents that because she was a teenage girl he
did not want her to have a big old ugly scar down her chest so he gave
her a 'bikini cut'. He cut underneath both breast (as where a bra would
fit) and "rolled" (her word) all of her skin and breast tissue up high
on her chest, and then went inbetween her ribs for the actual heart
procedure.
Many years ago I heard the great prof from Ohio State U 'cow
college' and he discussed 'blunt tissue trauma' and later glandular
development. Sounds similar in terms of scar tissue.....
Her OB has told her that the surgery was not around her areola,
therefore it probably would not affect lactation, and that if she ate
better she would make more milk.
Fortuantely both mom and baby love to nurse and she if fine with
using an SNS to maintain a breastfeeding relationship.
The question. Would a mamogram give this mom answers as too how
much glandular tissue/fatty tissue/garbage fibrous tissue/ she has??
Thanks!!!
