Regarding the occurance of pregnancy during lactation in other
animals, other primates nurse their babies into toddlerhood and
become pregnant during this time.  Large grazers such as cows
naturally only have one pregnancy per year in spite of a relatively
brief period of nursing, since their cycles (and those of the males)
are controlled by the seasons.  Many of these mothers would still
have a part-time nurser (a dabbler in teats) at their side when they
conceive the next baby.
