Hello lactnet members,
Just had a phone call from a mum with a three month old. Has history of thrush for about 3 weeks. Mum didn't treat initially because baby showed no distress and mum wasn't affected. Mum developed symptoms (sore-reddened nipples and tenderness) three days ago and consulted her neighbor who is "like a doctor". Unsure what she means, but was given a treatment regimen. Here is what she is doing-
acidophilus/bifidus 5 caps tid
caprylic acid 2 caps bid
garlic caps 2 caps tid
gentian violet applied to her nipples bid (baby receiving g.v. through nursing, but not directly)
husband is taking homeopathic Candida Away 2 tabs tid.
Her question was in regards to the gentian violet. She is under the impression that it is toxic to the baby and wondered if 14 days of this treatment will be harmful.
Archives didn't discuss toxicity, so I got her permission to post here.
Thanks in advance,
Debbie Grant, RN, breastfeeding counselor
