Hi lactnetters, here is a copy of a letter I got today:
Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC
Several months ago I was researching the viability of breastfeeding while on
Lithium. You sent me a draft of your new book and encouraged me to contact
motherisk in Toronto. Armed with info that I read in your chapter and info
that I learned from the folks at motherisk, I was able to convince the
primary doctors looking after me to set up a program to monitor Lithium
amounts in myself and (once only) in my baby's blood.
I am sending this note of thanks as it was very important to me to be able
to breastfeed and I did so successfully for 6 months. My psychiatrist has
told me a number of times he is very happy that I pushed to have the testing
done since the actual amount of Lithium in my breastmilk was extremely low.
Future mothers on Lithium and under my doctor's care will now have a few
options with respect to feeding their babies while on Lithium.
