Hello wiseones, please help this mom and baby.
Baby is 3 weeks old. Had short frenulum, clipped at one week. Mom had a
wonderful milk supply so weight gain, voids and stools never a concern.
No meds during labour/delivery,vaginal birth, healthy mom and baby. Sore
nipples from onset I believed d/t short frenulum. Realized may take a couple
weeks to sort out tongue.
At 3 weeks mom is still sore-lipstick nipple. Suck assessment, tongue is
coming down and forward but incredble pressure on finger, thrusting up with
tongue, clamping(mom describes this as well). I have tried tongue exercise,
football hold(hoping some gravity might help),pulling down jaw/lower lip
(which is always rammed up into the bottom of her nipple. Gone for deeper
latch, best positioning possible, suggested massage as infant has high
muscle tone(pushes against mom, holds head very well)-not working.
Important detail I left out-mom was sore immediately pp(abrasions),and
started nipple shield almost as soon; she wasnt referred to me until about
3-4 days old than would only latch with. Then mom found even after tongue
clipped still sore so she continued to use them.
Now baby refusing to nurse with shield but still has this disorganized or
over compensating suck. They are not really open to finger feeding or cup
or anything to prevent any further possible confusion. Also started some
abm last night(mom crying, Dad frantic). The baby keeps clamping. What
else can I do before it all goes down the tubes? She has a good electric
pump and is aware of the supply/demand principle.
thanks for any ideas
