Nikki, you wrote:
>Many mothers who come to me for lactation help are waking their healthy,
term babies on some sort of 2 or 3 hour schedule. In my experience,
babies
that are aroused from deep sleep don't feed well. They latch poorly and
are
not very responsive. Imagine someone waking you at 2 AM and shoving a
sandwich in your face! These mothers are doing it because some hospital
staff has impressed upon them that the baby MUST feed every 2 or 3 hours.

This was exactly the kind of situation I had in mind when I replied to
Renate's post about mothers being told to urinate every 3 hours! I wrote
that it was appropriate and effective to encourage mothers to listen to
their bodies and to read their babies' cues. We need to teach mothers to
use common sense - isn't that a sad commentary? I firmly believe that one
of the most important things we do is to give mothers confidence in their
own abilities, confidence that has been eroded by well-meaning but
misguided *experts*, both medical personnel as well as family and
friends. I won't even begin to start talking about the deliberate
attempts of formula companies to make mothers think thatbreastfeeding is
difficult and that human milk is inferior to a *scientific* formula.

warmly, Norma
