Regarding the physiology of the need for frequent stimulation after
separation in the initial days I read while I was studying last summer for
the IBCLC test in the Riordin and Auerbach book that the reason for
frequent stimulation is that in the initial days after birth is that with
each feeding/stimulation prolactin receptor sites are being formed in the
breasts...More stimulation=more receptor sites=more milk supply in the
future. Therefore by decreasing the stimulation in the first few days as
with a separation you may be setting yourself up for long term problems
with low milk supply. I like to tell new moms this because then they think
of the frequent feeds in the first days not as a negative but as something
that will benefit them alot in the future. Hope this is what you were
looking for. Barb, RN, IBCLC, mother of 4
