With the combination of a new mom & new baby, it can be difficult to get the
baby's head going in the right direction with the cradle hold.
I find that a good way of teaching the cross cradle is to have the mom hold
the baby in the cradle position. Get mom & baby properly positioned, then
just have her switch arm positions. Very simple. Then as Pat states, you
simply move the baby to the football/clutch position. I have the expectant
moms practice this with baby dolls in the breastfeeding class. They are not
afraid of hurting a doll, so they can easily practice holding & positioning
for nursing.
