I am 54 years old and am very glad to part of LACTNET. I have been a nurse
(LPN) for 22 years, 11 of which were in newborn. I will be taking the
I.B.L.C.E. exam on July 31. I have also worked in pediatrics, and several
years with autistic children. My time in newborn was primarily in the
breastfeeding setting and Level II Preemie "Feed and Grow". I'm also in my Jr.
year finishing an undergraduate Anthropology degree here in At. (going to
college since 1965 in between breastfeeding and raising 3 children). I am very
encouraged with the support I have received from breastfeeding educators such
as yourselves, in the year 2000. We've come a long way since I first started
(1980) just trying to get the breast babies to the mothers (out of the
nursery and away from supp. feedings!) and fought against all the the other
barriers to successful breastfeeding in the hospital setting.

In response to "INFANTS REACTION TO MENSTRUATION": I recieved a very alarming
E-mail warning, generating from research done by a graduate students at Colo.
Univ. It stated that in their research, it was found that toxic substances,
even traces of asbestos, had be added to tampons produced by a certain co.
These toxins caused continued bleeding, therefore requiring use of more
tampons, thus sales increased. If there is even a remote chance that this
could be true, could these toxins get into the blood stream and into
breastmilk, thus causing reactions (rashes etc.) in infants only during
menstruation? Although most breastfeeding mothers experience a delay in
menstruation, could there be treatment chemicals etc. used in producing the
tampons that could cause this reaction in an infants?
