<<When I first saw this mom, the baby was not latching well, with pursed

mouth and clicking. I offered suggestions for better positioning, giving

the baby postural stability by keeping him flexed, working toward a

wider latch, and using breast compression. I suggested to the mom that

the baby might be trying to make up for a less than optimal latch/suck

by nursing all the time. >>

Would I be correct in assuming clicking was not caused by a high palate or
tongue-tie? Is he latching well now? Was she ever or is she now sore due to
poor latch?

<<After eliminating the supplemental bottles, she still

found that her baby wanted to be on the breast all the time, nursing

and dozing. More than just nursing a lot to increase milk, this

ultra-frequent pattern has lasted weeks and months. Nursings overlap,

one into another. The baby also wakes a couple of times at night, again

wanting to nurse at length.>>

I do not know if there might be a mothering aspect to this, but just wanted
to throw this out. None of my babies slept very long unless they were in my
arms, and when they awoke, they immediately wanted to nurse. Does she use a
sling to carry her baby? When I did this, mine would sleep for 2-3 hours.
Would you/she desribe this baby as high-need? Fussy? In other words, is it
something unrelated to milk supply? He is, after all, gaining okay. BTW,
liquid chloryphyll is the best thing I know of for resolving anemia most of
the time.

<< Mom is resigned to

the non-stop nursing, but she wonders if her baby could be nursing

better/growing better/sleeping better. Of course, she would prefer

this! She wonders if she can increase her milk supply, or if her

medical history combined with the baby’s lackadaisical latch/suck has

made this too difficult. Drugs to increase milk are out of the question

since doctors are uninformed about them in our area. Mom is also not

interested in fenugreek since her doctor told her that there are no

studies that support it’s use for increasing milk.>>

Gotta love those doctors who wield such power! Just FYI, I do not just
recommend fenugreek, since, in my experience, herbs work best
synergistically. I recommend it in combination w/ blessed thistle, hops,
fennel, red raspberry leaf. Do you think the baby's suck is lacksadaisical?
Is the baby otherwise alert and developmentally normal? If nothing else
seemed to make sense, and I thought it was the baby's suck, I would refer for
cranial-sacral work.
