Another thing that happens at about 3 months with many breastfed babies is
a plateauing of weight gain (compared to formula-fed babies) which is
perfectly normal (I think I saw this in the DARLING studies). This is
particularly true if the early weight gains were large. This often gives
the mother, and her Child Health Nurse also unfortunately, the impression
that she is "losing her milk". I try to explain this phenomenon to mothers
before 3 months so they are not taken by surprise by it. Without this
knowledge this plateauing of weight gain and the softening of the breasts
just at the time that milk production settles down seems to give many
mothers quite a scare that they are "losing their milk".
