Prolactin can be an indirect culprit in infertility. Prolactin inhibits
progesterone, causing short luteal phases and preventing a newly conceived baby
from implanting in the endometrium.

A basal body temperature chart would be very useful; consultation with a
natural family planning teacher (especially one who teaches the sympto-thermal
method) could also help. The Couple to Couple League has a good network of
teachers in the Chicago area. While CCL's approach isn't for everyone because
of its religious component, it may be worth a phone call -- esp. in this case,
since CCL teachers never recommend weaning to nursing mothers. CCL is on the
web at http://www.ccli.org.

Short luteal phases can lengthen dramatically in response to improved nutrition
and supplements (particularly vitamin B6). I've mentioned this book here
before, but it may be helpful for this mother, too: Fertility, Cycles and
Nutrition, by Marilyn Shannon.
