Vicki,
While I agree that running a class on a negative note is not usually very
effective, I still think we need to be the ones to define the information
given about breastfeeding and AF. Right now, it is the makers of these
products and the media that define the dialogue. The makers of ABM are
perfectly happy to let us struggle within the framework they have created
(avoid guilt, breast is best, etc). We are not, with all due respect,
promoting a product. The attitude that these are two competing products is,
IMO, part of the problem, b/c it is usually the best marketed product that
owns the marketplace. This framework is based upon AF as the norm and if we
live within it, we will always be struggling to prove the "advantages of
breastfeeding". Breastfeeding can only speak for itself when women actually
do it and do it for more than a few weeks or even months. While most women do
not do so, bf will always play second fiddle. IMO, bf is a biological
imperative, not a nice thing to do if mothers feel like it. If we all just
move the whole language of Af/bf more towards this perspective, it may well
permeate the collective consciousness.
